Don’t Be Dumb at Brunch: Gay Gorillas, a New Drag Box and Right-Wing Homophobes Are Shady AF
Happy Sunday! We have a great group of stories for you this week. Subscription services are all the rage lately, and there’s a new one that’s a lot of fun. Sexy Matt Bomer is potentially facing a LGBTQ boycott of his new film this May. Plus a couple other interesting stories and, as always, we bring you our Whack Job of the Week. See who it is below.
Here are the week’s 5 news stories that’ll keep you looking well-informed at brunch:
1. Drag Delivers
Toying with the idea of untucking that fear — and then really tucking to bring your drag persona to life? Now you can have a “World of Drag” box delivered directly to your door. The box from World of Wonder (the producing company behind RuPaul’s Drag Race will have specially curated items with a drag focus to keep your friends gagging! The first box already has a must have item — a Bob the Drag Queen “Purse First” makeup bag. Get it now before you have to sashay away!
2. Bomer Backlash
Matt Bomer’s new movie, Anything, comes out May 11 and there are calls for the LGBTQ community to boycott the film. Bomer, a gay cisgender male, was cast to play a trans woman sex worker even though many trans actors auditioned for the role. Trans Narrative, an activist group, said they are sick of seeing this happen.
Now, certainly Matt is an actor and can choose to play any role that interests him. However, you wouldn’t cast a white man to play Martin Luther King, would you? It just seems that with the many trans actors looking for opportunities in Hollywood, executive producers and directors should encourage casting members of the trans community in these roles — similar to what Ryan Murphy has done with Pose.
Matt’s an incredible actor and will certainly sell tickets. Plus, he’s a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ community. Is this backlash warranted? Will you boycott this film?
3. Let us Prey
It’s nothing less than revolting when an organization built on discrimination and hate is able to win the classification of a church for tax-exempt status. We’ve railed against Focus on the Family multiple times for their anti-LGBTQ bias and spreading hate.
But did you know that since 2016, they’ve been classified as a bonafide church? Yep — they claim that their employees are Ministers and the work that they do is worship. We call holy bullshit on that. And yeah — we are biased because Focus on the Family is a member of ProtectMarriage.com, a coalition formed to sponsor California’s Prop 8, the ballot initiative to restrict marriage to opposite-sex couples, which passed in 2008. We all know how that ended.
Even with their “status” they continue to push the lines of political endorsement and participation on issues like abortion and LGBTQ rights. The scariest part of all is how this opens the door for any organization to define themselves as a church to dupe the government. Who’s next?
4. The Adorable Gay Gorillas
This week a photographer in the Netherlands captured some images of two young male gorillas engaged in some homosexual conduct. These adorable three-year olds are expressing their love (and passion) as any of us would. It really makes you wonder how common homosexuality or same-sex pairings in the animal kingdom are.
Well, it’s much more common than you think. In his 1999 book Biological Exuberance, Canadian biologist Bruce Bagemihl said animals exhibit “much greater sexual diversity — including homosexual, bisexual and nonreproductive sex — than the scientific community and society at large have previously been willing to accept.”
Well, at least the animals don’t have to deal with the discrimination and hate our community lives with every day. You know why? Because “homophobia” is taught — by humans.
5. Our Whack Job of the Week: Scott Lively
Well he’s back. Scott Lively, the homophobic far right preacher who was tried for crimes against humanity for his role in pushing Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” law. Guess what? He’s also a candidate for Governor in Massachusetts. Again. The last time he ran he lost — bigly. But this time, he hopes a new set of voters will rise up and stand beside him.
Who you ask? Good question. Closeted and conservative gays. Yep. If you are closeted, conservative or, better yet, both, Scott is hoping you’ll support him — he promises to be your voice. According to him, “The people they fear the most are not ‘homophobes,’ but ‘gays’ who insist that all homosexuals be leftists and ‘come out of the closet’ to join the ‘gay pride’ parade — actively hunting them like fugitive criminals to ‘out’ them in a humiliating manner if they resist or (if they are politicians) dare to vote against ‘gay’ progressive goals.”
Uh, yeah. Sure.
Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo were one of two plaintiff couples in California’s 2013 challenge of Proposition 8, which brought marriage equality back to the state after being ruled on by the U.S. Supreme Court.
