Aaahh!!! Real Monsters: The Contestants of ‘Dragula’ Season 3 Introduce Themselves
It all started as a raunchy L.A. party, and it’s since become a full-on pop culture phenomenon. The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula began as a party-cum-pageant in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, where performers of all types — drag queens, kings, AFAB (assigned female at birth) queens and everything in between — competed for the title of Dragula, “drag supermonster.”
The next incarnation of Dragula was as a full-fledged web series, where contestants competed in a reality TV format audiences knew and loved. Now it’s transforming once again, making the jump to one of the world’s largest streaming platforms, Amazon Prime Video, for Dragula Season 3. (In Canada it will also air on cable network OutTV, and in New Zealand on TVNZ.)
Despite Dragula‘s transformation over the years, the same spirit of inclusion that colored those early club days is still apparent in its present-day format as a polished reality TV competition. Dragula Season 3 made headlines as the first televised drag competition to feature both a drag king and a female drag artist competing alongside drag queens for a crown and cash prize.
“It was commonplace at our event to feature queer performers from all walks of life,” the Boulet Brothers tell Hornet. “We’ve always wanted the show to match that diversity — it’s our ultimate vision for the show’s future. It’s a little uncomfortable to have people praising us for including drag kings, AFAB queens and nonbinary performers on the show, because the show is a reflection of our community, and the fact is, these people are as much a part of our community as cisgender gay men are.”
Launching Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the United States and 63 countries around the world, the Boulet Brothers are excited to unveil a brand-new season of jaw-dropping drag, fear-based challenges and celebrity cameos. Appearing on Dragula Season 3 are none other than Henry Rollins, The Craft star Rachel True, NYC nightlife legend Amanda Lepore and more.
