The marketing efforts for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — sequel to the 2008 film starring Meryl Streep that turned a litany of ABBA songs into a cohesive story — have been hard to escape of late, leading up to its premiere this Friday, July 20. But today Cher has stunned us all with the announcement of her very next project: a Cher ABBA cover album. That’s right, an album full of the pop music icon covering tracks of the famed Swedish disco group.
Cher dropped this latest bombshell while being interviewed by Kathie Lee Gifford on the Today Show today, though she wasn’t originally forthcoming, initially remarking, “Should I say it?” in response to Gifford’s question, “What excites Cher at this point in your life?”
Then Cher spilled the news of her next project: “After I did ‘Fernando’ [one of the two ABBA covers Cher does for Mamma Mia! 2, along with “Super Trouper”], I thought, it would really be fun to do an album of ABBA songs. So I did.”
She goes on to say that this Cher ABBA cover album “isn’t what you’d think of” when you think of ABBA music, “because [she] did it in a different way.”

We can’t wait for more Cher music, and knowing that it will be a full album of tried-and-true hits makes the announcement of new music even more exciting.
The idea of a Cher ABBA cover album didn’t pop up out of thin air, as the diva had actually previously hinted at the notion via social media. Back in February, Cher responded to a fan by saying “Was thinking about ABBA cover CD.” Well, now it’s confirmed to be happening.

Cher portrays Ruby Sheridan in the upcoming film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, grandmother of Lily James’ Donna character and mother of Meryl Streep’s character. (Just don’t do the math, as in real life Streep is only three years younger than Cher.)
