Did Cher Just Reignite Her Legendary Feud With Madonna? (Video)
Since the early ‘90s there was an ongoing feud between Cher and Madonna, mostly typified by a few of Cher’s catty comments against her younger pop counterpart. The Cher feud with Madonna apparently continues into the present as Cher, while recently playing a “5-Second Rule” Q&A game with comedian Ellen DeGeneres, named “not Madonna” as one of the three celebrities she’d like to do a duet with (watch the video below). That’s some true Cher shade.
The game gave Cher and Ellen each five seconds to give three answers to a question. On one round in particular, when asked which celebs she’d like to sing a duet with, Cher immediately blurted out Adele and Pink, but, after stumbling for a third answer, went with “aaaaand not Madonna.”
The audience groaned and Ellen turned away, saying, “OK, Miss Negative.” Cher asked, “Did I cheat?” and Ellen responded, “Yeah, [the question] said who you’d want to — not who you wouldn’t want to.”
“I took a little license,” Cher said. Later on, Cher called Ellen a bitch (jokingly) when Ellen mocked her for suggesting she got turned on by eating chocolate.
Witness the Cher feud with Madonna get reignited on this recent episode of Ellen:
The Cher feud with Madonna stretches all the way back to 1991
Fans of the two pop divas may very well know that their so-called “feud” started in 1991 when Cher called Madonna a “c-nt” during a CBS interview.
Asked what she thought of Madonna, Cher said, “There are lots of things that I respect about her. I think that she knows how to work the business like nobody I’ve ever seen before. And, there’s something about her that I don’t like: She’s mean. I don’t like that.”
She continued, “I remember having her over at my house a couple of times, because Sean and I were friends, and she just was so rude to everybody. It seems to me that she’s got so much that she doesn’t have to act the way that she does.”
Cher concluded, “She acts like a spoiled brat all the time, and it seems to me when you reach the kind of acclaim that she’s reached and can do whatever you want to do, you should be a little bit more magnanimous and a little bit less of a c-nt.”
As far as we know, Madonna never publicly responded to Cher’s comment during that interview.
In subsequent interviews around 1992 and 1993, Cher said her feud with Madonna had been blown out of proportion, and she added, “I really don’t have anything against her. … I do respect that she goes much farther than anyone should go.”
In other interviews at the time, Cher said that Madonna wasn’t beautiful and not really a “great” singer or actress.
